May was National Stroke Awareness Month
May is National Stroke Awareness month. According to the CDC a stroke occurs in the United States every 40 seconds. That’s about 790,000 strokes every year. Nearly everyone in the U.S. has been affected by or is close to someone who has had a stroke. Advancing age and a family history of someone who has had a stroke are two risk factors out of our control.
16 new seats given to Cordova caregivers
On May 13 and 14, Native Village of Eyak hosted a car seat checkup event in partnership with Center for Safe Alaskans. As part of the grant, Buckle Up for Life provided 16 seats to caregivers in need of a car seat or booster seat.

Run or bike and run the Bay to Bay in May
There will be a free run or run/bike event May 7 in Cordova. It is called the Bay to Bay in May. The event starts in Hartney Bay and will finish at Orca Bay Lodge. It is open to all ages. Participants can either run the entire course of 9 miles or they can bike 6 miles to the Cordova Center then run/walk the 3 miles to Orca Adventure Lodge.
Cordova Iceworm Swim Team takes second place
Valdez Torpedoes Swim Club hosted its annual Banana Swim Meet on April 8-9. Thankful for the ferry schedule, 24 Cordova Iceworm swimmers attended the meet with families and coaches, along with YMCA from Anchorage, and Chugiak Athletic Club (CAC) from Eagle River.
