Backlog of sexual assault kit evidence in Nome to be processed by Virginia firm
Donations totaling $38,295 from Kawerak Inc., Norton Sound Health Corp. and the Norton Sound Economic Development Corp. will pay for testing by a Virginia firm of dozens of backlogged sexual assault kit evidence to speed up the criminal justice process.
Alaska Symphony of Seafood postpones November event
The annual competition for new retail and food service products created from Alaska seafood is being postponed from November to the spring of 2021, due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers of the Alaska Symphony of Seafood said.
CDC says 1 of 3 Alaska adults is obese
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the percentage of Alaska adults who are obese rose from 29.5 percent in 2018 to 30.5 percent in 2019, but still less than the 34.2 percent counted in 2017.
Alaska fishermen, Oregon foundation help feed military families
A partnership of Sitka based commercial fishermen, an Oregon based domestic non-profit and the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska is helping Alaska’s military families to fill their freezers with a total of 50,000 pounds of donated wild Alaska seafood.
Kodiak Chamber will host U.S. Senate debate on Oct. 10
Officials with the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce have confirmed plans for a fisheries themed debate at 5 p.m. Oct. 10 between Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, and independent challenger Dr. Al Gross, a commercial fisherman and orthopedic surgeon.
Hunter success prompts closure of moose hunt
Registration permit hunt RM164 for bull moose in Game Management Unit 6B has ended, after confirmation that the maximum allowable harvest of 28 bull moose had been taken by hunters, Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials in Cordova said.
Boost in unemployment benefits coming
Alaska has received another $62 million in federal funding to increase by $300 the unemployment checks for thousands of qualified residents. The increase is expected to last about six weeks.
Register to vote by Oct. 4
Alaska residents have until Sunday, Oct. 4 to register to vote or to update their registration.
Iditarod announces COVID-19 mitigation plan
A multi-tiered COVID-19 mitigation plan is in the works for the 49th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, a trek which itself commemorates the intrepid huskies and mushers who raced to Nome in five and a half days with serum to quell a diphtheria outbreak.
